No Subscription Coming to Call of Duty

July 20, 2010

The rumor circulating yesterday about an online subscription coming to the Call of Duty series, due to a video appearing on YouTube, was shot down today by Activision higher-ups, stating the video was just a glitch in Xbox Live.

Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling said in a blog post: “To be clear: There is not, and will never be, additional fees required to subscribe and play Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer.”

Treyarch, who is developing Call of Duty: Black Ops, due out this November, also defeated these rumors via tweet.

Although Bowling said there will never be a subscription required to play multiplayer online, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has expressed interest in eventually creating a subscription-based program in order for players to have access to playing Call of Duty games online.
